Cornhole Scoring
Cornhole is growing in popularity and what was once a diversion for a few Ohioans is now a coast-to-coast phenomenon. The idea of Cornhole, which is sometimes referred to as “corn hole†or “corn toss,†is simple. Players take turns tossing bags of dried seed corn at a plywood target. Whoever has the better aim should win the game.
The actual scoring system used in cornhole reflects that general simplicity of the game, but is a little more involved than just seeing who tossed the most bags on the target. Let’s look at the method by which participants may score a traditional cornhole game. The cornhole “box†is actually a piece of wood, angled at a slope, that features a fairly large hole toward its top. The low end of the box faces the players, who stand approximately thirty feet away. The box is usually painted, which renders it smooth enough for the bags to slide a bit on impact.
In a basic two-player game, each person tosses four Cornhole Bags at the target in each round. The first player to score twenty-one points wins. Points are accumulated based on the quality of the toss. If one merely gets their bag on the board, they score a single point (this is called “being in the countâ€). A corn hole player whose bag falls in the hole grabs three points (this is known as “being in the hole).
The only minor wrinkle to this easy scoring system is that scores from any given round “cancel†each other. If the first bag tosser put all four bags “in the count,†and the second player placed one bag in the hole (missing with the other three shots), the first player would be awarded one point. His or her four points would be offset by the opponent’s three. As such, it can take longer than one might expect to score the required twenty-one points, particularly if the contestants have comparable skill levels. Cornhole can also be played on a team basis. The same general scoring system is used for team play, as well
Cornhole is easy to play, easy to grasp, and easy to score. Three points when your in the hole. One point when your in the count. Scores offset one another and the first person to twenty-one wins.
