 Discovering Cornhole

by Debbie

My husband and I discovered the fun and addicting game of Cornhole at our daughter's college. All the kids were playing and competing against each other and it looked like fun. I was hesitant to try it, but my daughter insisted we participate. Once we did, we were hooked.

I don't know why we waited so long to get one. We kept saying we were going to make our own game, but never did. Now my daughter is out of college with a family of her own and is sick of dragging the game, along with her children to every summer family party. So we decided it was time to get a cornhole game of our own.

Cornhole Over Horseshoes

I was introduced to cornhole a few years ago during a 4th of July picnic in the backyard of my employer, with many of my fellow co-workers. Being raised playing horseshoes, my first impression was this game is for kids, but after playing the game for several hours, I was hooked. So was everyone else, and we all have become addicted to the game of cornhole.

Now at every outdoor occasion, during spring, summer and fall, someone is bringing their cornhole set to play. This coming 4th of July, I will be introducing the game to my family for the first time, who are all hardcore horseshoe players. I know it won't be easy to convince them to play, so I am not giving them the option. I will not be setting up the traditional horseshoe pits, which take hours to setup.

Instead, I will be purchasing my first cornhole sets, and setting that up in minutes. I know, once everyone starts playing, just like me, they will see how much more fun cornhole is to play over horseshoes.

I'm certain, that after this 4th of July holiday, the family horseshoe pits will become vacant and cornhole will become the new family tradition over horseshoes.

A Fun Family

Our extended family is a fun bunch. For wedding showers, we often have both women and men invited and make it a family get together. One of my nephews was getting married and we were having a "family" shower. Indtead of the typical women's games, they had a cornhole tournament.

I'm an "aging" athlete, so not many things I can participate in without major pain. However, I signed up for the corn hole tournament and had a blast. Didn't get beyond the second round, but was the only player to sink four straight in the hole in the tournament. Unfortunaely, my opponnt was able to sink 3....that's the round we went out on, to the eventual champs.

Have played a bit off and on since then, but now that my kids are grown and I have two son in laws, I figure it's time to get SERIOUS!

Great family game that we can all participate in. Even my non competitive wife gets her game on for this!
